Intervention ISO 14001

ISO = Institute Standard Organization = International Organization for Standardization.

Definite standard for controlling and improving the environmental performance of a structure. It focuses on Environmental Management, the entity realized to minimize the harmful effects of its activities on the environment.

First version of ISO 14001 was released in 1996 and updated in December 2004. As with other ISO 14000 standards, it is voluntary, therefore we have deliberately chosen to apply this standard as it presents several distinct advantages to our company:
-it provides a management tool to integrate environmental issues in the management of camping, in the same way as quality and safety.
-with ISO 14001 we have to work differently to follow the standards of this benchmark, so it is interesting to adapt this type of financial mastery.
-it is a good way of communicating internally and externally.

The fundamental principle and overall goal of the ISO 14001 standard, is the concept of continual improvement. ISO 14001 is based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology. The five phases of this system are:

- Environmental Policy,
- Planning,
- Implementation & Operation,
- Checking & Corrective Action
- Management Review

For example, with the campsite L'Oceano d'Or:

The management is directed by one person working for the administrative part and one person working on site for the technical part.
We make at least one internal audit a year with the help of the CCI (Chamber of Commerce and Industry) which does a simulated audit and once a year it will be done by a qualified company.
The Océano d'Or is a campsite of 8 hectares with : 430 pitches, 5 sanitary blocks, one block with bar, reception and leisure room (the snack and shop are not included in the certification), one TV Room, one laundry room, a water park, a multisport ground, one tennis court, one fitness room. We devote almost 10 hours for the administrative part and 10 hours for the technical part per week.
Finally, with ISO 14001 we have a full description of the reliability, risks, safety and environmental impact of the products used in the campsite.

The green key is the first international label for touristic facilities. With the Green Key, holidays naturally open up to environment.

The Green key is a label for touristic facilities conducted by the Foundation for the Education of the Environment since 1998. It rewards campsites, hotels and cottages for their involvement in environmental improvements.

THE CRITERIA OF THE GREEN KEY : an everyday environment involvement.
Criteria of the Green key have been established at international level, and adapted to French specificities by the of-FEEE in partnership with the FNHPA for campsites and the UMIH for hotels (see the Partners page). Cottages and B&Bs are for now subject to hotel criteria. A specific table is being developed.

The criteria are continually evolving and include the following topics :

• Control of general environmental operations: respect of the legislation, environmental projects to be established in 2 years and the involvement of our suppliers.
• Waste controls: reduction of quantities at source (use of multipacks) and recycling.
• Water controls: conform sewers, regular meter checks, installation of economic equipment (taps, showers, toilets) and reasonable watering.
• Energy controls: regular checks of energy consumption, a good insulation of the buildings, use of renewable energies and low energy light bulbs.
• Indoor and outdoor spaces: non smoking areas, utilisation of non polluting products and composting.
• Environmental instruction: campsite staff involvement, raising customer awareness in relation to nature and respect for the environment.
• Landscaping (concerning campsites) : enough green area, land use density less than 50 pitches per hectare, regulated car usage and use of vehicles forbidden during the night.

We cannot mention future without mentioning environment. We acquired the label ISO 14001 in our test site, L'Océano d'Or in 2007. We have decided to continue working towards sustainable development and the protection of environment.
These actions will be seen in the short and long term. We have already started by taking action recycling, use of water savers taps, rain water tanks, heat pumps and plants which are adapted to the local conditions. In the near future, "ecological mobile homes" made of material and equipment which is environmentally friendly. TOGETHER, LET US RESPECT NATURE!
