This well-known seaside resort finds its name because of the long sandy beach situated on a shore of rocks (Les Sables); and 'Olonne' which originates from Hebrew and means "rise above a source of water".

The city extends from a beautiful port with animated docks to a long fine sandy beach of 3kms.

The promenade was built in the 18^th century to protect the low lying city. You can enjoy a gentle stroll along the promenade which is surrounded by residences, hotels, cafés, restaurants and shops, all contrasting with the more typical area of La Chaume.

In the port of les Sables you can walk around the fishing pond where you can also appreciate eating the fresh fish and seafood in these specialised restaurants.

A specific dock is available for heavy cargo ships. The Marina, called Port Olona, has a capacity of a 1000 boats and extends from les Sables d'Olonne to La Chaume.
